Funerals and End of Life

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.” - Psalm 23:1-3 (NRSV)

What is the purpose of a funeral?

Funerals are important “rites of passage” that help us say farewell to our loved one and bring some closure to our relationship with them. Many families have found that the funeral service was an important time for telling stories and hearing how much their departed loved one meant to others.

 Your first call will likely be to a funeral home of your choice. They will begin the process of preparing the body according to your wishes, scheduling the funeral, and arranging for burial.

 You may contact the church at any time to let us know of your loved one’s death. The funeral home will also contact the church and consult with the Pastor as you set the date and time of the service.

 We can help you plan all aspects of the service, including scripture, music, prayers, eulogy, and anything else you would like to include. You are also welcome to utilize our Fellowship Hall on the lower level of our church for a gathering/luncheon after the service.

Here are some more questions you may have:

Can you provide a meal for the service?

Yes! Our congregational care team can provide a light luncheon with catered cold cut sandwiches, deli sides, and “pot luck” salads and bars, as well as coffee and beverages. Download our meal planning worksheet here to get started.

Do you accommodate military honors?

Yes! We will accommodate full military honors in all our funeral services.

Will you perform funeral services for those who wish to be cremated?

Yes! We are inclusive of all manners of disposition of bodily remains.

I need to have a pastor preside at a graveside burial/internment only. Will you assist me?

Yes! If there is a funeral/memorial service taking place elsewhere, we may want to contact your presider to coordinate, but otherwise we are happy to accommodate those who only wish for someone to assist with a local graveside service of any size.

Can you help me plan my own funeral?

Yes! Planning your own funeral ahead of your death can be the greatest last gift you can give to your loved ones. Help alleviate their grief and concerns about how best to honor your memory by making your own choices about your end-of-life plans. Our pastor can work with you to create a funeral plan that fits your personal choices.

Do you have any resources available to help me make decisions about hymns, readings or honorary roles for friends or family members?

Yes! Our funeral planning worksheet can help you make decisions to create a meaningful, spiritual service for yourself or your loved one. Download our worksheet here.
